Really Start Spreading the News!

Dearest Family and Friends,
I love you all so much. Thank you for the letters, emails, dearelders, and packages! Mom, you're a saint for many reasons. I have been getting all the packages. Sorry I didn't let you know earlier. They don't give us any time for communication here. I'll probably end up writing another letter to finish up everything I don't have time to say in email. The donuts were great, and I've been building my relationship with my district with all the other goodies. But it's not like our relationship needs a lot of building. We're all really close. It's cool to see how close the Spirit can bring people. We're definitely lifelong friends, I would say. Ok, there is so much to address. I forgot to mention a few cool things about the MTC last time. First off, The Cream Soda Tree. There is this tree in the middle of the MTC campus that smells like cream soda. It's incredible. I sniff it often. Second, the mountains of Provo are beautiful. I have made it a goal to summit Squaw Peak. It's been calling to me the whole time I've been here. To address TDKR, I will offer my heartfelt thanks for the news you all brought. I'm very glad to hear it was incredible. I thought it would be. I have great faith in Christopher Nolan. And Mom, thank you so much for sending the songs to Jason. Give him my thanks for being so kind and willing to help. I really appreciate it. I was going to be a little bummed that I couldn't get the full potential out of the songs. Tell him to take his time. I trust his musical judgement as far as what he will do with them, but I will say that if it was possible to have violin and harmonica placed in some of the songs, that would be really awesome, I think. But I'm going to be more than happy with any help. That's so crazy that my wonderful family is moving! And we're arriving in our respective destinations at the same time! So cool. The title of this email is such, because I learned something interesting along those lines. One of my roommates, Elder Broadbent, was saying that we are literally going to be spreading the news in New York. That was cool to think about, but what made it even cooler was my awesome teacher Bro. Reeves saying that the word gospel literally means good news. So we're spreading the good news! Cool, right? I"m running out of time, but I want to share a really powerful experience I had last week. The day after TDKR came out, we were all kinda talking about it to one of our teachers, asking him if he'd seen it yet, and telling him that we shaved the Batman symbol into Elder Phillips' chest. To our great surprise, he really chastised us. He called us out for being focused on the world and not on the mission, and basically told us we needed to straighten out. It was really hard to hear, but I think he made a good point. I think that it's ok to have a little clean fun every once in a while, but I know I was definitely being way too worldly. We all felt pretty humbled after that, and I know that at least for me, it was a tough day. But the incredible Elder Heiner saved us all from misery and woe. At the end of the night, we all gathered for district prayer, and Elder Heiner gave one of the most beautiful prayers I've heard. After the prayer, we all just sat in silence for a few minutes, because we all had a lot on our mind. Then, Elder Heiner started to give the most powerful sermon I've witnessed. The kid has the strongest spirit ever. He told us that he had been thinking about our district's situation, because he noticed that the other districts were all going to the same place. For example, the other district in our zone were all going to Salt Lake. He then pointed out that our district had Elders going to Tucson and New York, virtually on opposite sides of the country. He said he had been thinking about why this was, and he had decided that we were put together because we all had something to learn from each other. By this point, I was sobbing uncontrollably. The Spirit was so thick. He pointed out some of the things we each had that we could share with the group, and he asked us to think about what would happen to the rest of us if any two of us had decided not to serve a mission. It's not often that you can make a room full of adult men weep. But Elder Heiner has something really special, and I've learned so much from him. Honestly, that was probably in the top 3 for most spiritual experiences I've had ever. It was so awesome. Ok, so I really wish I could expound and tell you all more, but I'm almost out of time. I'll have a chance to talk a lot more on Monday morning when I call! I can't say exactly when I'll be able to call, but I'm leaving at 3 in the morning, so it could be really early. I wish I had more details, but I would say to just have your phones near on loud. I'll probably call Mom's cell if that's ok. I'd like to let you all listen to Make Your Own Kind of Music. I can't wait to talk to my family! I love you all so much! Have lots of questions for me to answer. When I sit down to email and the timer starts, I freak out because of the pressure and forget what I want to say. So make sure to bring up anything I've missed on Monday! Good work with the scripture assignments. We can talk more about those on Monday too!
Love, Elder McDonald

Travel Plans!

Elder McDonald got his travel plans and it looks like he'll be landing in NYC on Monday, July 30.  He spends the first night at the mission home, and then will be assigned to an area within his mission boundaries. How crazy is it that Jarom will be moving into his first apartment in NYC on the SAME DAY that we will be moving into our house in Clovis? Weird. Anyway, here is the address of the mission home, and this will be valid for the entire 2 years. I will post his actual addresses as I get them, but they will always get mail to him that is sent to the mission home too.

The Day We've All Been Waiting For!

I FINALLY got an email from Elder McDonald today! He has written me a couple of short snail mail letters letting me know he's alive, but here's one to share! The subject line was "A Dark Day". Way to freak out your mom, Jarom...

Family! I love you all! And I miss you! But everthing is going great! This place is pretty awesome. I learn so much everyday. Ok, so I have zero time to email here at the MTC, so I'm going to see how much I can pump out in rapid fire. I'm going to disregard the finer points of grammar and sentence structure to a certain extent. First off, I imagine most of you have already seen The Dark Knight Rises. This makes me happy for you, but as you can probably tell from the subject of my email, I'm feeling some sadness today. My roommates and I held a moment of silence this morning for The Dark Knight Rises just to show a little respect. It was a touching moment. Also, last night, Elder Phillips, an elder in my district with a healthy amount of chest hair, volunteered to have his chest hair shaved into the Batman symbol. I was elected to do the honors, and I have to say that it came out pretty darn cool looking. When I can send you guys pictures, you'll be able to see the masterpiece. So, though it is a dark day, we have found ways to cope here at the MTC. I hope that The Dark Knight Rises is really phenomenal. Could you bring a picture of me with you to the theater when you see it if you haven't already? I would appreciate that. I'm kidding... kinda. So things are crazy here. It's a sad life for a poor little vegetarian boy at the MTC cafeteria. It's actually just a sad life for anybody who likes to eat food and have it make them feel halfway decent. I think I'm going to pull through though. Everything else compensates, fortunately. The teachers are awesome, and I'm gaining so many new insights every day. There are so many simple things that I just never thought of. I have an opportunity to teach just about every day here, so that's a really good experience. My companion and I have been working with this one investigator who is actually our teacher playing a role, and he is very hard to teach. He falls asleep during the lessons and just doesn't listen. But, yesterday, my companion and I drew up what we thought was a money lesson plan and went into the lesson ready to kill it. We tried to follow the Spirit, and he committed to reading the Book of Mormon and praying about it and also he said that he would be willing to be baptized eventually. It was awesome. But it's so cool how my scripture study has changed since I've been here. As I study, I often subconsciously do so with the investigators in mind, and often the things I learn are things that I think will help them. As a bonus, I often learn something completely new as well. There is so much I could tell you all about, but I literally get 30 minutes to email and then it shuts off, so I have to breeze through. But I'm keeping a journal so I can fill in the details when I get more time to email. Also, feel free to email any questions so I know what you want to know. So how about a few funny stories? My district is just so cool, and everyone in it has something special about them and is a top notch individual. There is one elder from Melbourne, Australia named Elder Cooper, and as such, I find myself speaking with an Australian accent automatically at times. But he is a really cool guy. He's a convert, and he's always sharing really insightful thoughts with us. Another really cool elder in the district is Elder Heiner. He's from Star Valley, Wyoming so you can imagine a little bit what he might be like, I'm sure. But he is such a stud. I think I told you in the letter maybe that he has cerebral palsy. He just doesn't let that hold him back at all. But he is seriously the comedic relief of the group. Some of his roommates are keeping a journal of all the hilarious things he says. Just the other day, he gave one of his choicest lines: "I was a model in a former life; I just had a better body." He is constantly making such jokes. He being from Star Valley, and being a cowboy and a hunter and a country music listener and all that, there have been times when he and I have disagreed politically/socially. We obviously don't really talk politics here at the MTC, but little things come up, and we tend to have our differences of opinion. I didn't think much of it, because our discussions are always respectful and friendly, but the other day, he made it clear that he noticed our differences. He was behind me at the salad bar, and I was about to get some salad, but there were no tongs in the dish to pick it up with. After thinking for a moment, I just used my bowl to dip into the salad and scoop some out. Elder Heiner, looking on, said something like "See, even a Democrat can have intuition." I had to laugh at that. It was pretty hilarious. But he really is the coolest guy, and he is definitely always good for a laugh. I'm at the 3 minute mark now, so I'm going to blast some stuff rapid fire.

My last one sent too early, but I'll try to cover more next week! I gotta go! I love you!

And He's Off!

Today was the big day! We could not be more proud of Jarom for his decision to serve and for the incredible young man he is! I'm sure the next few weeks will be amazing for him as he studies and learns at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, UT preparing to take NYC by storm! I'll be posting his emails here, but he LOVES letters so if you have a minute to write, it would be a huge comfort to him as he adjusts to his new life.

His address for the next 3 weeks will be:

Elder Jarom Scott McDonald
MTC Mailbox # 152
NY-NYS 0730
2005 N. 900 E.
Provo, UT  84604-1793

There are a couple of cool companies online that you can send letters to missionaries in the MTC for free or send care packages. Dearelder.com is great for letters, you just type up what you want to send and they will print it and put it in an envelope and deliver it for free. They also have a treat delivery service but it's pretty pricey.
For treat deliveries, the best bet is mtcdelivery.com. They have fun stuff that they deliver same day if you order by a certain time.
